8 December 2024 – Kyu Grading at Zanshin North Herts SKA

The grading weekend continued with record 28 students passing their kyu gradings at Zanshin North Herts SKA with Sensei Roy Tomlin MBE. Well done to all!

8-10 November 2024 – JKA Malta International Gasshuku 2024

Over 40 members of JSKE from Lewisham, Cambridge and GT.Karate joined Sensei Roy and Sensei Ken, who were invited to teach, at the 2024 JKA Malta International Gasshuku. The weather could have been kinder, but we had three days of real fun, training hard and making new friends. A huge thank you to Sensei Dario Chircop (5th Dan, Chief Instructor of JKA Malta) and other members of JKA Malta for their absolutely amazing hospitality!

10 November 2024 – Dan Grading Success at the JKA WF England Halifax Course

There was a 3 hour training course with Sensei Kawasoe, followed by a Dan grading in Halifax. We are very pleased to announced of a Dan grading pass by a member of JSKE!

3 November 2024 – UKTKF National Championships at Windsor

Many members of JSKE competed at the 2024 UKTKF National Championships. Many congratulations to those who participated and also came home with medals!

2 November 2024 – JKA WF England Course at Windsor

28 members of JSKE from Lewisham, Cambridge, Zanshin and GT.Karate attended the Part 1 of the karate weekend in Windsor with 3 hours training by Sensei Kawasoe. There were all elements of kihon, kumite and kata (Bassai-Dai & Gojushiho-Sho). More karate in Part 2 tomorrow!

Tosan Awani in Top 16 at the JKA World Championships

JSKE member Tosan Awani (Cambridge Karate Dojo / Zanshin North Herts) represented JKA WF England to compete at the JKA World Championships in Takasaki Japan in the cadet categories on 25th October 2024. He was placed in the semi-finals (last 16) in the individual kata category. Many congratulations Tosan!

11-13 October 2024 – JKA Munich Gasshuku with Sensei Naka

9 members of the JSKE family attended the 3 day training camp in Munich, instructed by the ever amazing Sensei Tatsuya Naka (7th Dan, Honbu Dojo). In the seminar we learned about “shin, gi, tai” (heart, techniques, body) and how we need to strive to unify the three elements. It was once again mind-blowing!

23-27 April 2024 – Japan Tour Part 2: Okinawan Karate Experience

Following on from the JKA International Spring Gasshuku, we stayed on for another week to experience Okinawan Karate. We were extremely priviledged to meet and train with top Okinawan masters. It was a facinating and thought-proviking experience, discovering the origin of Shotokan Karate.

15-21 April 2024 – Japan Tour Part 1: Honbu Dojo, Okinawa Gasshuku and Grading Success!

10 members from the JSKE family travelled to Japan for a karate tour. They started in Tokyo, where on Monday 15th the members attended the lunch time session at Honbu Dojo taught by Ogane Sensei, focussing on the weight transfer between the legs in all stances. Then on Tuesday the members visited Naka Sensei’s dojo, Taishijuku. Naka Sensei comes up with new ideas everytime we train with him! On Wednesday the team flew to Okinawa, where they joined 200 other JKA members from 33 countries to attend the four day 2024 Spring International Gasshuku, this year held at Budokan in Naka, Okinawa for the first time. The teaching was utterly incredible by Senseis Ogura, Imamura, Imaizumi, Naka, Hirayama, Okuma, Kurihara and Ogane. By the end the week the members were all totally exhausted but extremely happy. The highlight of the week was the two grading passes on Thursday:

As you can imagine, the celebration went late into the Okinawan night!

16 March 2024 – 3rd JSKE Spring Course

Nearly 70 karatekas came together for another wonderful day of training with Sensei Masao Kawasoe, the Chief Instructor of JKA WF England, Sensei Roy Tomlin MBE and Sensei Ken Hori at Queensmead Sports Centre. Sensei was on form! It was great to see friends again. Thank you everyone for your support!

9 March 2024 – Kyu Grading at Cambridge Karate Dojo / Cambridge University Karate Club

Another record! A total of 81 students trained and 59 students passed their kyu grading with Sensei Roy Tomlin MBE (50 from Cambridge Karate Dojo and 9 from CUKC), including 2 double grades. Well done to all!

3 March 2024 – JKA WF England Squad Training and Referees Course

Members of JKA WF England gathered at Windsor Leisure Centre for the first post-COVID squad training and referees course, taken by Sensei Roy and Sensei Ken.

2 March 2024 – CUKC Victorious at Varsity

CUKC travelled to Ifley Road Sports Centre to take part in the annual Varsity Match against Oxford University Karate Club. After a contest which was much closer than in recent years, Cambridge retained the Enoeda Cup as the overall winner!

25 February 2024 – CUKC at BUCS

11 members of CUKC travelled to Ponds Forge International Sports Centre, Sheffield to take part in the two-day BUCS (British Universities and Colleges Sports) Championships. As expected competing under WKF rules proved to be very challenging. Many congratulations to Yusuf Karim for winning a bronze medal in the intermediate individual kata category.

17 February 2024 – Kyu Grading at Tanren SKC

32 students passed their grading at Tanren SKC with Sensei Ken Hori, including one double grade. Well done to all! This is part 1 of the two gradings at Tanren this Spring due to many being away for half term. We’ll do it all again on 23rd March!

10 February 2024 – Cambridge hosts Sensei Tom Kompier 7th Dan WTKO

Cambridge Karate Dojo / Cambridge University Karate Club had the pleasure of hosting Tom Kompier sensei, 7th Dan WTKO, who was CUKC’s Men’s Captain in 1993/94. Tom sensei has lived and trained in Japan, joining the famous JKA Instructors Course in 1998, and was the KWF World Kumite Champion in 200. Nearly 50 members from Cambridge and clubs in Hertfordshire and Essex joined the course at Kelsey Kerridge. Tom sensei focussed on the use of hips in tsuki, uke and keri, as well as explanations of how muscles are used in different techniques (my favourite – “Don’t use the hamstring. Let the hamstring use you.”) It was a very insightful afternoon!

3 February 2024 – JSKE Referees Course

Members of JKA WF England gathered at the University of Hertfordshire Sports Village for the first JSKE Referees Course, taught by Sensei Roy and Sensei Ken. It was the first time for many trying out refereeing! Well done all for trying very hard!

15-17 December 2023 – JKA France Shotokan Karate Gasshuku with Sensei Naka

Three members of the JSKE family attended the 3 day training camp in Boulogne Sur Mer, instructed by Sensei Tatsuya Naka (7th Dan, Honbu Dojo). In the photograph below they are joined by Sensei Philippe Maquaire (6th Dan, General Manager of JKA FSK), Sensei Sergio Gneo (7th Dan, Chief Instructor of JKA Beligum), as well as two members of JTKI. Chris Denaro (Lewisham) was the official translator from English to French for the weekend!

26 August 2023 – Matthew Last Memorial Seminar at Cambridge Karate Dojo

To celebrate the life of Matthew Last, who was a member of both JSKE (Cambridge Karate Dojo) and HDKI, a seminar and a dinner was held in Cambridge attended by over 70 friends of Matthew. This included people from Ireland, France, Holland and Sweden, as well as many more on Zoom. There were two sessions: the first being taught by Scott Langley sensei, 7th Dan HDKI, and the second by Ken Hori sensei. A total of £1,404 was raised, which has been donated to FairFight, a charity that Matthew supported generously, and Arthur Rank Hospice, who looked after Matthew and his family in his last days. Tanren SKC raised further Euro 200 from their activities. Matthew would have been so proud of this day.

Tanren SKC raises money for charity!

Tanren SKC raised an incredible £1,000 for Lewisham Foodbank, and another £1,000 for City Harvest who run a Christmas meal and homeless shelter programme over the holidays. Well done all, what an amazing effort!

19 March 2022 – 1st JSKE Spring Course

130 karatekas from across the country enjoyed a fantastic day of training with Sensei Masao Kawasoe, the Chief Instructor of JKA WF England, Sensei Roy Tomlin MBE, Sensei Stew Brown and Sensei Ken Hori. There were also 15 grading passes. Well done to all!
